The group met with Col. Robert Sinkler, Commander of the Hurricane Protection Office, and received an overview briefing before riding out to see and walk on top of the surge barrier, which stretches 1.8 miles across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Bayou Bienvenue, the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet and the marshland between these waterways. From the surge barrier, the group could also see the massive new floodwalls in St. Bernard Parish that will help reduce storm surge risk in that parish.
