Advocacy Training
On March 15, 2010, Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans sponsored and coordinated an Advocacy Training Workshop to introduce skills to members of non-profit volunteer organizations. Fifty-seven people, representing 17 organizations in the metropolitan area, attended the lunch meeting. |
Randy K. Haynie, head of Haynie & Associates, a Baton Rouge based lobbying firm, conducted the workshop. Mr. Haynie has authored several books on the subject of advocacy and is one of the region’s most well known lobbyists. He trained 100 Citizen for 1 volunteers during the group’s first trips to Baton Rouge advocating levee board reform. Mr. Haynie stressed simplifying messages and developing pro-active ways of relating to busy legislators.
State Legislators Neil Abramson and Cedric Richmond gave the group an overview of the anticipated 2010 session and stressed the importance of developing ongoing communication with their legislators. Carolyn Roemer Shirley, Head of the Charter School Association, discussed communication with members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the New Orleans Public School Board and gave an overview of what legislation to anticipate in the upcoming session. |
