EDITORIAL: Flood control, not fiefdoms

Tuesday, March 13, 2007

The authority that oversees the new consolidated east bank levee district is concentrating on flood control instead of bike paths, parks and green space -- the things that consumed some levee districts in the past.

That's the right focus. The authority exists because of public dissatisfacation with the old way of doing things, President Tom Jackson said. In fact, the law creating the consolidated districts says that they must get rid of all operations not directly connected to flood control.

There is no job that's more crucial. While recreation enhances the quality of life, levees, pump stations and flood gates preserve lives and property. Nothing should distract the new authority from that mission.
